5 Top Tips for your University Move-In Day

Posted by Sophie Compton on

Congratulations, move-in day is approaching! Move-in day at University is one of those experiences you'll remember for years - and not because it goes perfectly, but because it marks the start of an exciting new chapter.

It's a mix of nerves, excitement, anticipation and a whole lot of cardboard boxes. The key to making it less stressful, is a little bit of preparation, so we're here to help with our quick 5 top tips.

1. Keep first-night essentials separate

When you finally arrive, unpacking everything may not be realistic, and that’s okay. Keeping a stash of first-night key essentials which are easy to access, can take the pressure off move-in day. With the below, you'll have just enough to make your first night comfortable without having to dig through boxes, when you're tired.

Include:

  • Bedding (sheet, pillow, duvet)
  • Toiletries and a towel
  • A phone charger
  • Snacks and refillable water bottle
  • Important items like ID, keys, medication and paperwork

2. Break the ice with flatmates early

Meeting flatmates is one of the biggest milestones of move in-day, so it's one of our biggest pieces of advice. While it can feel intimidating, remember: everyone is in the same position and making small efforts can help ease nerves on all sides.

You could:

  • Keep your door open while you unpack to invite quick conversation, and introduce yourself as more flatmates move in
  • Offer to make a round of tea and coffee
  • Suggest a small group activity once everyone is settled, like going to pick up some food from the supermarket

3. Make your room feel like your home

Your room will become your little safe-haven, so making it feel comfortable early on can help with homesickness.

  • Add personal touches like photos of you and your loved ones
  • Use blankets and cushions to soften your space
  • Set up cosy lighting or a desk lamp to create a serene atmosphere

4. Explore your new surroundings

Once the boxes are out of the way, take time to step outside and explore. Getting to know your new environment helps build confidence and comfort from the start.

Walk around your accommodation to find your common areas, laundry room and bins etc. - and take stroll around your local areas to find some key spots like supermarkets, cafes, bus stops and gyms.

5. Expect (and embrace) a bit of chaos

No matter how much you prepare, move-in day is rarely flawless. It can get busy! Don't let this frustrate you, see it as part of the experience, and try to enjoy every moment.

Everyone around you is going through the same thing, and those hiccups or stories become something you'll laugh about with your flatmates.

Good luck and have fun! We're rooting for you!
