The uni shopping deinfluence

What students actually need for university (and what’s a complete waste of money)

Moving your child to university for the first time can make even the most sensible parent panic-buy. Suddenly one uni bedroom apparently needs nine saucepans, enough towels for a hotel and an ironing board for a teenager who has never ironed a T-shirt in their life.

As the UK's leading Student Kit supplier, one thing we hear year after year is the huge amount of pressure parents feel when moving their child to university for the first time. It's completely understandable that this stress can lead even the most sensible parent to panic-buy.

Suddenly, one uni bedroom apparently requires 14 different kitchen utensils, three sets of bedding and enough towels to keep a small hotel in rotation for weeks. Then move-in day arrives and the reality of limited student storage kicks in.

We've helped thousands of students move in over the years, so we're pretty confident in giving you the truth.

The truth? Students need far less than you might think.

Too much kitchenware

High street kitchen ranges are designed for families. Student kitchens are not. It's very easy to get carried away in the kitchen aisle, but cupboard space in shared accommodation is limited and one student simply doesn't need a nine-piece pan set.

A decent saucepan, one frying pan, one or two chopping boards, a couple of decent knives, a wooden spoon or turner, tin opener and peeler will cover most student cooking, and our Essential Student Kitchen Kit offers just that.

All the basic cookware with a couple of plates, bowls, mugs and sets of cutlery and you've got more than enough to get them started.

Check whether their accommodation has induction hobs before buying cookware. Not all pans are induction-compatible, so buying induction-friendly cookware now gives them a better chance of being able to use it wherever they live next.

Do they actually NEED three sets of bedding?

Unless your teenager has undergone a dramatic personality transformation before Freshers' Week, they're probably not going to start changing their bedding every other day.

Two sets. That's plenty.

Multiple sets of bedding

Two sets of bedding is more than enough for most students. One can be on the bed while the other is being washed.

What we absolutely wouldn't skip is a decent mattress protector & a decent topper. It's much easier option than explaining how a mystery stain appeared on an accommodation mattress at the end of the year... (and you'll get your deposit back, so it's a win either way.)

A family-sized crockery set

Most high street sets contain far more crockery than one student actually needs.

It might look like excellent value until four dinner plates, four side plates and four bowls are fighting for space in one very tiny student cupboard.

Plus, let's be realistic: the more crockery they own, the more there is to mysteriously accumulate beside the sink.

Two Crockery Kits is usually plenty.

Every trending cleaning product

No one needs to arrive at uni with enough cleaning products to stock a supermarket aisle.

They're also likely to be sharing a kitchen with several other students whose parents have had exactly the same idea.

Start with a few basics like our Washing up Kit & Cleaning Kit. All they really need is Washing-up liquid, a multi-purpose cleaner, cloths, bin bags and laundry detergent to get going.

Flatmates can work out the rest once they're there.

You're sending them to uni,

Not competing with the B&M cleaning aisle.

Be honest.

Have you ever seen them iron at home?

If the answer is no?

Grab them some easy-iron spray and hope for the best.

An ironing board & iron

We admire the optimism, but if they won't iron, easy-iron spray is their friend.

Ultimately, if your teen doesn't currently iron their clothes at home, university probably isn't going to be the moment they suddenly develop a passion for perfectly pressed T-shirts.

If that unexpected urge strikes later, shops will still exist.

Okay, YOU CAN buy these

So... What do students actually need?

There are definitely some basics almost every first-year student will use, and ironically they're often the things students forget.

Duvet
A GREAT DUVET 10.5 tog is a good all-rounder. Be sure to check their university bed size first.
Pillows
A COUPLE OF PILLOWS 1-2 is perfect, pick from a range of fillings & softness to suit them.
Bedding
BEDLINEN2 x bedding sets including a fitted sheet, duvet cover and pillowcase(s)
Mattress protector
MATTRESS PROTECTOR1 x quilted mattress protector for comfort & deposit protection
Towels
TOWELS & TOILETRIES 2-4 is more than enough

The other trap

Buying everything from everywhere

It's not just what you buy that can make university shopping unnecessarily expensive and stressful. It's how you buy it.

A duvet from one retailer. Pans from another. Towels somewhere else. Then several emergency orders during the week before move-in because everyone suddenly remembers what they forgot.

Apart from the cost, it means waiting in for multiple deliveries and watching the car slowly disappear under boxes.

Plus, when BBC ONE's Shop Well for Less ran an independent comparison against buying with UniKitOut vs the High Street, we saved a family £183.

THE 'DRIVING TO UNI' MATHS

One car + parent(s) + one student (sometimes a sibling) + three suitcases + one duvet + cookware + a laundry bag = Absolutely ZERO visibility out of the rear window.

UniKitOut was born to solve exactly this problem.

We work with over 350 universities and student accommodation providers across the UK so students can pre-order their bedding, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom essentials together and have them delivered directly to their university accommodation before they arrive.

And the before they arrive part is key. Student accommodation will often only accept ordinary parcels once a student has checked in, which isn't very useful when the parcel contains everything they need from day one.

Instead of trying to squeeze a duvet, saucepan, laundry basket and the rest of their possessions into the back of your car, we arrange for the essentials to be waiting when they get there.

Make it yours

And the best part? You can even build a unique kit that fits them

Every student is different, so you have the option to customise a kit to suit you. Pick single items or from one of our ready-made bundles, then add, swap or remove whatever you like until it's perfect.

Just need two sets of bedding and one pan? No problem. Want an extra towel or a mattress protector? Add them in seconds. You decide exactly what (and what doesn't) turn up in the box, and it's all delivered to their accommodation before they even arrive at Uni.
